Embracing The True Gifts of Christmas: Calm & Connection through Kindness

The silly season’s here. A time full of gatherings, gift giving and - let’s be honest – a little bit of stress. But beneath all the hustle and bustle (and freaking out about family and finances), there’s a magic to embrace. Yoga teaches us to pause and look beneath the surface, and when we do, we realise that what keeps us returning to these traditions year after year has nothing to do with Santa (or possibly even Jesus) - but the connections we feel through kindness, presence, and genuine generosity. And so, this month, we’re exploring how giving can nurture your heart, calm your nervous system, and build a stronger sense of community.

Looking beyond ‘me’

Is it just us or do you notice an unusual buzz around self-care this time of year? Gotta take care of numero uno amidst this crazy time! Don’t forget to set your family boundaries, say no to the parties you’re not keen on, book in for a massage, get yourself a Christmas present – and for the love of God don’t eat too much! Don’t get us wrong – taking time for yourself is important. But sometimes, in a world that can feel overly focused on the individual, it’s easy to forget about something just as powerful: showing up for others. And, coincidentally, it’ll likely leave you feeling even better than a face mask!

That’s right: Science says kindness is good for you too

When you do something kind (more on that to come!), your body releases oxytocin – aka the “love” or “warm fuzzies” hormone. This helps reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and boost feelings of happiness and connection. So, kindness is a good way to calm your nervous system – which can be especially helpful when things are feeling hectic.

What Yoga teaches us about kindness

Yoga philosophy has been talking about this for thousands of years. Take ahimsa — the practice of non-harming or kindness. It’s not just about avoiding hurt; it’s about choosing kindness in your words, actions, and even your thoughts. And then there’s karma yoga, the path of selfless action, which encourages giving without expecting anything back. When you give from the heart - especially during the busy holiday season - you invite peace and calm into your life.

Why community matters – now more than ever

Being part of a community that cares feels pretty amazing. It reminds you that you’re not alone, that you belong, and that your actions - no matter how small - truly matter. When you care for others, you’re caring for yourself, and seeing that self as part of something bigger – which is the true essence of yoga.

10 ways to spread generosity and kindness this December

  1. Send a thoughtful message - Reach out to a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while just to say you’re thinking of them.

  2. Offer a kind word - Use satya (truthful speech) by giving genuine, kind compliments to your classmates or instructors. Honest kindness builds trust and connection.

  3. Drop off a treat - Bake or buy a small treat and leave it for a neighbour or someone who could use a pick-me-up.

  4. Practice listening with presence - When someone shares, listen fully without planning your response. This mindful attention is dharana - focused awareness - and a profound way to show care.

  5. Invite a friend to move with you - Whether it’s a yoga session or Pilates class, sharing movement deepens bonds and spreads the joy of mindful practice.

  6. Give yourself time to help others - Volunteer your time to support events or community activities, embodying karma yoga, the yoga of selfless service.

  7. Practice gratitude out loud - Share what you’re grateful for in class or with friends. This cultivates santosha - contentment - and encourages generosity of spirit.

  8. Be mindful of your energy - Approach interactions with aparigraha (non-attachment) by giving kindness without expecting anything in return.

  9. Support local mindful businesses - Choose to shop or gift from small studios, makers, or wellness providers in your community. It’s a way to nourish the ecosystem of mindful living.

  10. Donate time or items - If you can, volunteer at a local charity or donate items like good quality gifts or food to a local centre in need.
